Life Renews

The line between renewal and extinction is a line so fine.
When the rain stops tapping on your roof,
is rain extinct?
Does silence behind the storm
mark extinction of the wind?
Does birth assure renewal?

Through her gift of life,
this bonobo mother renews herself, and her kind.
Even as she fades from life,
her child grows brighter in her shadow.

But her son is in peril.
This mother has no power
against ravaging saws,
and concrete and greed.
Against such perilous walls,
life fails passage.

When the light of renewal
finds no life on which to perch,
a shadow falls forever.
Extinction is forever.

Will this young bonobo find passage
into a future time,
like rain that keeps renewing?
Or will his kind expire,
like embers of a fire?

Renewal or extinction? We decide.
